New Company Specializes in Rare Type of Photograph Made With Platinum
Myrold Studios owner Jason Myrold launched his company this year with the aim of creating personal photographic collections for clients with an interest in preserving their history. By harnessing the stability of the precious metal platinum and the durability of quality paper, photographs that last thousands of years are possible. The hallmark of the platinum-based photograph, or "platinotype", is its extreme permanence. What sets it apart from traditional silver-based or color photographs, is its immunity to oxidation and fading from light, the two primary elements that plague photographic images. Think of tarnished silverware or a faded color photo, respectively, as real world examples. The platinotype is a black and white photograph. It is made by exposing a negative against paper coated with a sensitized solution to ultraviolet light. The result is very fine particles of pure platinum being deposited into the fibers of an acid-free paper. Read More
